Alonso linked with McLaren return

Martin Whitmarsh attended an art exhibition dedicated to Fernando Alonso in Madrid this week and according to a report in the British media, the McLaren Principal was trying to persuade the Spaniard to re-join the Woking outfit. According to an article in the Daily Mail, Whitmarsh missed the prestigious Autosport Awards dinner in London on Sunday so that he could catch a Monday flight to the Spanish capital in order to “escalate an attempt to sign Fernando Alonso”.

The tabloid also claims that an unnamed McLaren spokesperson admitted that “Team Principals of the four teams for which Fernando has driven in F1” were all present at the opening of the ‘Alonso Collection’, an exhibition devoted to the two-time former World Champion. “But it is understood that Whitmarsh – who, in fact, was not Alonso’s Team

Principal during his one, strife-torn year at McLaren – is keen to develop a channel of communication to Alonso with an eye on bringing in the Spaniard for the 2015 season,” the report continued.

Whitmarsh has long been a fan of Alonso and confirmed earlier this year that he would be interested in bringing the Spaniard to Woking if the opportunity arose. “Let’s be frank, people want to sign Fernando Alonso because he is one of the best motor racing drivers in the world at the moment,” Whitmarsh told Sky Sports News in September.-PlanetF1.
