YES, the lion roared again. Alpha Institute did it again, this year silencing all contenders fighting for space.
Some people underestimate the importance of speech training through public speaking and debate in schools and mistake it for social entertainment. Nothing boosts individuality and confidence better than public speaking. It is also a tool for leadership training, team work and fertile turf for development of verbal intelligence. Inability to argue and discuss intelligently and convincingly is a serious handicap in any space of leadership.
When students scoop awards and prizes in public speech they are investing in leadership and life skills. If you cannot speak your thoughts freely, clearly and confidently, you are not yet liberated, mentally.
Alpha Institute emerged the overall winners in a grueling debating contest pitting seven high schools in Mutare district. The contest topic organized by E.M.A. was ‘Wetlands are fragile and sensitive ecosystems. Human interference should be banned. Discuss.’
Moving on the left lane, non affirmative side, the composed Alpha Institute team oozing confidence and exuding sharp thought and intelligent argument, battled it out against tournament favourites, Mutare Boys’ High, who were squarely beaten at both fact and confidence.
On the road to victory, Alpha Institute also silenced Mutare Girls’ High who then came out second, and Sakubva High School.
St Dominic’s took first position on the affirmative side.
Overall best speaker was Alpha Institute’s Elisha Mwawanga in Lower Six while debating club captain, Temba Runhare was full of praise for his team.
Speaking to The Manica Post after the contest, he said it was a well deserved victory as they had worked hard and hard work rewarded them.
“We are now preparing to take the bull by the horns in the provincial competitions and we are bracing for our perennial rivals St Faith’s and Bonda if they made it in their districts.
Patron of the Alpha team, Mr Willard Mubururu was on cloud nine over the achievement and insisted that the lion is ready to roar again in theprovincial competitions.
Other schools who also took part in the district competitons were Karirwi Adventist High and Nyamauru High school.
