THE Shinja community in Chimanimani West has taken possession of infrastructure left behind by Alrosa Zimbabwe, a mining company that recently concluded its operations in the area.
The handed-over infrastructure includes buildings and two large rehabilitated ponds, which are now being utilised for fish farming, a project initiated by the company.
Alrosa Zimbabwe had been exploring for diamonds in the region for a year and a half, but unfortunately did not yield positive results.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Deputy Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Development, Honourable Joshua Sacco commended Alrosa for its responsible and environmentally conscious approach.
“Zimbabwe and Russia have a long-standing and cordial relationship, dating back to our liberation war era, during which Russia provided us with immense support. This relationship remains strong and ongoing, with a partnership in place between Alrosa and the Government. As the people of Chimanimani district, we are delighted that Alrosa is leaving behind a sustainable legacy. Following inspection and clearance from the Environmental Management Agency (EMA), who confirmed that the company had adhered to proper environmental guidelines and rehabilitated the environment, Alrosa has ensured a proper exit. Unlike some miners who leave sites in a degraded state and the community with nothing, Alrosa has chosen to follow the correct procedure,” said Honourable Sacco.
Alrosa managing mirector, Mr Sergey Loshkarev, said it is part of their culture to leave communities in better positions than they were before, through sustainable projects.
“Today, we hand over not only physical infrastructure but also a symbol of partnership and shared progress. These assets are now entrusted to the community to support local development and improve their livelihoods. Although our journey here may not have led to immediate mining activity, it has reinforced our conviction that communities are at the heart of sustainable development, and it is our duty to leave them better than we found them,” he said.
Chimanimani West Member of the House of Assembly, Honourable Wilson Maphosa said although the initial exploration at Shinja did not yield the desired results, Alrosa ensured that the community would benefit from something tangible and sustainable.
He urged the local community to properly maintain the infrastructure for the benefit of future generations.
