All roads lead to Amagugu Heritage Centre on 6 April where different activities are expected to take place in a fun filled week, celebrating the pride of our traditional foods.

In an interview with Sunday Life, Butholezwe Nyathi the event organiser said Amagugu Food Expo has been running for three years.

“This is the third edition of the expo, it came as a response to climate change which affects immensely food security and we are saying that our traditional food are more drought resistant so let us encourage smallholder farmers to grow traditional foods as they also have high nutritional value,” said Nyathi.

Women around Matopo district were invited to come and showcase their traditional foods.

“Basically we invited women farmers around Matopo where they are going to display traditional food stalls, display seed and also take part in a cooking competition. We will also give them a platform to sell their produce thus creating a market for them,” he said.

He narrated the order of events.

“We will be targeting schools from Primary, Secondary and Tertiary as we are mainly meant to give no formal education and on the last day it will be a food expo. We will also have some time with business people on how best we can monetise traditional food,” he said.

Artistes and MC Babongile Skhonjwa will also grace the event as he is going to be leading the braai on rocks, while singer Hwabaraty, Drums of Peace, and Charles Banda will be responsible for the entertainment. People will have time to enjoy traditional food, beer and there will also be mountain climbing.
