Amakhosi to unveil first exhibition at new art gallery

THE vibrant heart of Bulawayo beats anew this Saturday as the Amakhosi Cultural Centre unveils its first art exhibition at a newly curated gallery, the Amakhosi Art Gallery in Makokoba.

The initiative, led by the late arts doyen Cont Mhlanga’s legacy and championed by his daughter, Gcina, promises to be a transformative cultural event.

The exhibition, titled Sibambe Ngamazinyo is curated by internationally acclaimed artiste, Owen Maseko, in collaboration with the Visual Artists Association of Bulawayo (Vaab) and will showcase a moving collection reflecting the resilience of individuals navigating daily struggles in a dynamic society.

Sibambe Ngamazinyo, which translates to “We’re holding on with our teeth”, symbolises the tenacity required to persevere through life’s challenges – a fitting tribute to the spirit of the community.

Gcina, a trustee of the Cont Mhlanga Foundation and chairperson of the Amakhosi Cultural Centre board, was excited about the gallery’s potential.

She said the Amakhosi Art Gallery’s impact extends beyond mere exhibitions; it aims to serve as a vital platform for mentorship and professional development.

“One of the cornerstones of what Amakhosi Cultural Centre does is structure its programmes to expose young people to opportunities and training,” Gcina elaborated.

“This art gallery intends to present a space where young visual artists can be mentored into professional levels, making their artworks accessible and hopefully leading to sales and increased livelihood income through art.”

As part of the launch, attendees are encouraged to bring art supplies to donate, supporting the Centre’s mission to provide free art lessons to the youth of Makokoba.

“We hope this gallery will help reduce drug and substance abuse, as it keeps young people busy and engaged,” Gcina noted, highlighting the Centre’s commitment to cultural and heritage tourism.

The opening ceremony will take place in the afternoon, inviting all to immerse themselves in the local arts scene and connect with the creative community.

“Preparations for the exhibition are in full swing, and we’ll be ready by Saturday. Most of the main components are in place,” she assured.
