AFTER setting Bulawayo ablaze with a high-energy album launch, award-winning Imbube ensemble Amaqaqa are taking their latest project, Insakavukela Umchilo Wesidwaba, to Johannesburg where they will perform at the Hillbrow Theatre on 20 September.

The group, famed for their powerful harmonies and captivating stage presence, says this “Mzansi invasion” is more than just about music but also about unity. Their tour comes at a time when tensions among African nationals in South Africa have been stoked by anti-foreigner movements such as Operation Dudula.

Dubbed “The Spirit of Africa: Umlilo Kachothoza,” the Johannesburg show promises to celebrate African heritage through music and dance. The production will showcase the richness of African traditions, telling stories of everyday life through the raw, soulful sound of Imbube.

Joining Amaqaqa on stage will be Imbizo, Lihle Izulu, Inkanyezi ZeZulu, Khiwa, and Zinkonjane Indigenous Voices, turning the event into a night of cultural pride and musical firepower.

Khulekani “Khabo” Madodana Dlodlo, Amaqaqa’s frontman, said they are still buzzing from the success of their Bulawayo launch at Hope Centre.

“The turnout was amazing, the energy was electric, and the crowd’s enthusiasm was overwhelming,” said Khabo. “We realised the importance of engaging with our fans and creating an immersive experience. Our music truly resonates with the audience, and that motivates us to keep pushing boundaries.”

Khabo said they have been rehearsing non-stop and fine-tuning their set list to ensure they deliver a mind-blowing performance in Johannesburg.

“We are already in Mzansi and ready to share our music with a new audience. Fans can expect a mix of our old favourites and fresh tracks from the new album,” he said.

He promised a night to remember. “We are bringing the house down with our signature sound, energetic stage presence, and heartfelt performances. Johannesburg must get ready for an unforgettable experience.”

With excitement building, Amaqaqa’s cross-border tour is shaping up to be more than just a show. It is a musical mission to unite, inspire, and celebrate African identity.
