THE Zimbabwe amateur golf season resumes this morning with the Julius Robinson Trophy set for Wingate Golf Club. The tournament has always been the second on the calendar and replaced the Dugmore Trophy which was postponed this year. Wingate golfer, Nicholas Masunga, is the defending champion after he won his maiden amateur title in his backyard last year. Masunga won the event after a three-hole play-off with Stewart Krog. He beat 120 other golfers who took part in the two-day 36-hole event after shooting an impressive two-under-par score. The Julius Robinson is one of the seven events taken into consideration in the selection of the national team for the World Amateur Championships or Eisenhower.
Most of the players took part in the Ray Straker Under-23 event at Chapman some two weeks ago.
The event saw Stuart Krog, who had some good performances towards the end of last season, continuing with his fine form.
The Zimbabwe Golf Association vice-president, Boniface Chigorimbo, said they were expecting a competitive show.
“We are looking forward to a competitive event and, as the first event of the season, everyone will be looking forward to it.
“I hope the rains will not let us down and we will finish the 36 holes,” Chigorimbo said.
