THIS year, the acclaimed acapella group, Amavevane Acapella, is celebrating a remarkable 28 years of creating unforgettable music and entertaining audiences around the world. Formed in 1996 by a group of talented friends who started as a soccer outfit, the group has built a legacy of excellence, inspiring generations of music lovers with their rich harmonies and captivating performances.

Previously known as White Umfolosi, the group has managed to raise the Zimbabwean flag high over the African skies. Their journey, from performing for revered figures such as the late former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, to showcasing their talents to Queen Elizabeth, is just a glimpse of the path that Amavevane Acapella has travelled from the thickets of Ngwana Village in Bulilima district.

The group comprises Future ‘Ndex’ Moyo, Silinganiso Ndlovu, Ezekiel ‘Mafohla’ Ncube, Lucky Moyo, Tshela Nkomo, Mloyiswa Mpofu, Emmanuel ‘Mabhaye’ Ndlovu, Mbonisi Mhlanga, Musa Maseko, Collen Maphosa, and Calvin Moyo, who works in the Amavevane Acapella administration.

Known for their melodious voices laced into the imbube/isicathamiya genre, their dances encompass styles such as gumboot, umchongoyo, amabhiza, and isitshikitsha.

Their dedication to their craft has earned them a loyal following and critical acclaim, cementing their position as one of the most beloved and respected acapella groups in the industry.

As they mark this significant anniversary, the group reflects on their journey, remembering the early days of hailing from a village setup, performing at local events, and dreaming of the success they have achieved today.

Through hard work, perseverance, and a shared passion for music, they have created a legacy that continues to inspire and uplift audiences worldwide.

To celebrate this milestone, Amavevane Acapella has planned a special anniversary concert to be held in neighbouring South Africa on August 31, featuring a selection of their most beloved songs, as well as new material that promises to delight fans. The event will be a testament to the group’s enduring talent, creativity, and dedication to their craft.

The 28th anniversary of Amavevane Acapella will be held under the theme “The Butterflies in the Music Industry Since 1996.”
Ndex said the event is inspired by a few issues — overwhelming support from their fans, and the love and passion they have for what they do.

“We want to embrace and share the journey, which obviously has ups and downs, with all our followers. We have simply followed the dream, the vision, which is to keep singing for peace, love, and happiness around the world.

“The secret to 28 years has been to stay committed and follow your dream. Artistes also need to act professionally and stick to the plan. Artistes should have their own menu, don’t chase a lot of things. Though it’s okay to be diverse, stick to being yourselves,” said Ndex.

He said their latest work, the release of their fourth album titled Njengevevane.

“The album was released early this year, and we are on course with plans for the year, which include the launch of the Amavevane Acapella Clothing Brand, where we have T-shirts, sunhats, caps, work suits, and imbatata (sandals). We are also running a winter special for tracksuits.

“We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all our families, friends, and fans around the world for standing with us from day one,” said Ndex. — @mthabisi_mthire
