ONE of the most flamboyant social clubs in the country, Amavevane, will tomorrow hold a memorial soccer tournament for their former members who have died in the past two decades. The tournament will be held at Ascot Race Course with three teams, Plumtree Social, Globetrotters and Isigubhu expected to fight it out with Amavevane as they remember seven late members.
Amavevane play in the Golden Oldies League and are home to former Highlanders chairman Themba Ndlela, Highlanders board members Cosmas Sikhosana, Justice Nicholas Mathonsi, city businessman Harold Sibanda who is the chairman of the club, Bulawayo City Council Housing and Community Services deputy director Dictor Khumalo among other prominent people.
Alex Mafu, Thomas Sibanda, Douglas Macebo, Jabulani Moyo, Israel Dungeni, Temba Ncube and former Emakhandeni Member of Parliament Cornelius Dube are some of the members.
Some of the Amavevane members based in the diaspora like Mbusi Dube are already in the country while others from South Africa are expected tomorrow.
Sport and Recreation Commission board chairman Joseph James will be part of the Globetrotters team with Sikhumbuzo Ndebele, a former Highlanders player turning out for Isigubhu as well as renowned city transporter Bekithemba Khumalo of Nunu Taxis.
Key players for Amavevane will be Paul Mpofu, Gladwin Jaravaza, Jabulani Khanye, Methuseli Mafu and Jasi Dube.
Chairman of the Amavevane organising committee, Jacob Moyo said the soccer tournament will be preceded by a prayer service at their Ascot Club House.
“It’s that time again when we take time to remember our departed members.
“We have invited their family representatives or surviving spouses,” said Moyo.
Premier Soccer League chief executive officer Kennedy Ndebele is expected to be the guest of honour.
