A Bulawayo-based dance collective is proving that dance is more than entertainment, using artistic expression to empower young people, promote positive lifestyles and create opportunities for emerging talent to shine on bigger stages.
The Amazing Star Dance crew, founded by local creative Mbongeni Nxumalo, known in entertainment circles as Marcel, comprises 10 young men and women united by a passion for dance and a shared commitment to inspiring the next generation through creativity, discipline and teamwork.
Beyond captivating audiences with energetic performances, the group has positioned itself as a platform for youth development, encouraging young people to channel their energy into constructive artistic pursuits.
Marcel said the crew’s mission is centred on using dance as a vehicle for personal growth and community transformation.
“Our mission goes beyond entertainment. We use dance as a tool to inspire young people, promote healthy lifestyles and create opportunities for emerging talent to showcase their abilities on local, national and international stages,” he said.
Marcel believes dance can play a significant role in addressing social challenges affecting young people by providing them with a sense of purpose and belonging.
“Our mission is to empower these young people into a productive artistic lifestyle. Dance has the power to educate, unite and bring hope, and we want every young person who joins us to discover their potential while making a positive impact in society,” he said.
The crew distinguishes itself by blending contemporary and traditional dance styles, creating performances that celebrate Zimbabwean culture while embracing modern artistic influences.
According to Marcel, the combination of diverse dance genres allows members to develop their creativity while producing performances that resonate with audiences across different age groups.
“What makes The Amazing Star Dance Crew stand out is our diversity, creativity and dedication to excellence. We continue to train, innovate and grow while encouraging every member to develop not only as a dancer but also as a responsible leader,” he said.
Since its formation, the group has become a familiar presence at community and commercial events, performing at cultural festivals, charity functions, school programmes, corporate gatherings and awareness campaigns. As part of its expansion plans, The Amazing Star Dance Crew is recruiting aspiring dancers from across Bulawayo, offering them an opportunity to hone their skills in a supportive and disciplined environment.
Looking to the future, Marcel said the group hopes to forge partnerships with musicians, organisations, event promoters and sponsors who share its vision of investing in young creative talent.
“Our goal is to become one of the most respected dance crews in the region, known for professionalism, originality and inspiring performances while creating more opportunities for the next generation of dancers,” he said.
