AMAZON Club emerged as women’s champions of the Binga leg of the Zimbabwe Volleyball Association Beach Volleyball series yesterday.
The Amazon pair of Vuyiswa Dlomo and Nyengetari Guyo emerged supercharged for the final to overcome Tracy Njanji and Lillia Chirandu of AM Academy 1 2-0 to claim gold in the final at the Binga sand beach.
It was sweet revenge for Amazon after AM Academy 1 had beaten them by the same score line in the group stage.
The tournament had six women’s teams and Amazon, who missed the first beach volleyball series held in Manicaland, started slowly and only won their first game 2-0 against Great Zimbabwe University.
They went on to knock out the first women’s ZVA beach series A-Team 2-0 in the semi-finals to set a date with AM Academy 1 in the final.
AM Academy 1 had also registered a 2-0 win over GZU 2 in the group stage. They beat GZU 1 2-0 in the semi-finals.
“It was a great tournament, we started off slowly as we failed to acclimatise earlier, but we’re happy we recovered early and managed to win,” said Dlomo.
In the men’s category, Luvac, winners of the first ZVA series in Manicaland, beat AM Academy 1 2-1 in a pulsating final.
Luvac were made up of captain Handsome Moyo and Proud Nyoni.
Victoria Falls-based Shalom Ballers were knocked out 0-2 in the semi-finals by Harare’s AM Academy 1.
Luvac, an academy based at Luveve High School, beat GZU Green and AM Academy 3 in the group stages before ejecting GZU White 2-0 in the semi-finals.
“It feels good to be champions. Our target is to win the final leg in Harare,” said Luvac captain Moyo.
