AMBASSADOR of Zimbabwe to Kenya, Uganda and Somalia Winpeg Moyo has been appointed the chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Nairobi Chapter.

She took over from Ambassador of the Republic of Angola to Kenya, Sianga Abilio, at a ceremony held at the Embassy of the Republic of Angola.

The day was dedicated to upholding the unity and shared vision of the SADC Member States and celebrating the achievements of the regional organisation.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Ambassador Moyo said the SADC region has proved to be a formidable force in guarding and defending its sovereignty and the right to continued self-determination.

“From engaging in peace efforts to defending individual Member States from the scourge of sanctions, SADC countries have stood in solidarity with each other, encouraging other countries such as our host Kenya and other friendly nations to uphold and support SADC projects and programmes verbally, financially and technically,” she said.

“At this juncture, allow me to use this platform to thank the bloc for its unwavering support of the clarion call to remove the illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe which has so far been moderately successful.

“We hope that through concerted efforts, the few conflict hotspots remaining within the region will regain peaceful existence.

“By working together and supporting one another, including forming collaborations and partnerships with other countries and organisations, we can ensure that the vision of a united, prosperous and resilient Southern Africa becomes a reality.

“As such, the SADC Group in Nairobi will continue to work closely with the Government of the Republic of Kenya.

“We hope to soon engage in mutually beneficial programmes and projects.”

Ambassador Moyo said that as they reflected on their collective journey and the future of SADC, it was crucial to acknowledge the diaspora community’s invaluable role in shaping regional development.

“Your contributions, both through financial support and expertise, have been instrumental in driving progress and fostering sustainable growth across our region.

“The SADC diaspora is a bridge connecting our diverse nations with the global community, offering unique perspectives and resources that are vital for our developmental efforts.

“Your involvement extends beyond mere remittances; it encompasses sharing knowledge, fostering entrepreneurial ventures and advocating for our region internationally,” she added.
