IN the United States, MacKenzie Scott, the wealthy ex-wife of Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos, poured US$14 million, into early childhood education, last year.

According to the influential Forbes magazine, she is one of the wealthy female billionaire philanthropists changing the face of early education in that country.

In Asia, education has been topping the projects into which philanthropists, across the huge continent, are splashing their money.

Zimbabwe has always carried a badge of honour for its massive investment into its education systems which have produced some of the leading figures in corporate leadership corridors around the world.

For over 2 600 Zimbabwean students, at the country’s tertiary institutions, a rainbow of hope filtered through their lives last year when their tuition fees were bankrolled by a Good Samaritan.

Prophet Eubert Angel, the Presidential Envoy and the country’s Ambassador-at-Large to the Americas and Europe, hit the right notes with his philanthropic investment into the education of those higher education students.

He was appointed ambassador-at-large by President Mnangagwa in March 2021 with a responsibility to attract trade and investment opportunities in the Americas and Europe.

Among the religious leaders in this country, he was the one who stood out last year, in terms of philanthropic work in not only playing a part in educating the nation, but also feeding tens of thousands of vulnerable people.

His foundation yesterday said the Ambassador’s mission is to cover the educational requirements of, at least, 10 00 students in the country’s higher education institutions, by the end of this year.

“The Ambassador-at-Large, whose aim is to pay fees for over 10 000 students by year-end this year, paid full tuition for all the students, at three schools, for the whole year in 2022,” his foundation said.

“He also paid fees for University Students across the country and even intends to extend this philanthropic work by extending the number of students to, at least, 10 000, by the end of this year.

“He is driven by his conviction that playing a part in educating the next generation of the country’s leaders is the best way to safeguard the huge gains which Zimbabwe has made since gaining its Independence.”

The foundation also said it was humbled by the contribution the ambassador played in ensuring some of the country’s most vulnerable people received some foodstuffs.

“From 2021 to 2022, the foundation has now visited 120 different places, across the country, donating mealie-meal and foodstuffs.

“The foundation has already distributed mealie-meal and groceries to places like Mhangura, Mufakose, Mutare, Kariba, Kambuzuma, Plumtree, Honde Valley, Dema, Bulawayo, Zaka, Masvingo, Highfields, Glen View, Glen Norah, Mbare, Budiriro, Chitungwiza, Zaka, Chiredzi, Norton, Harare South, Gokwe, Hatfield, just to name a few.

“The donations are given to everyone regardless of political affiliation.”
