Former Cabinet minister and diplomat Ambassador Amos Midzi who was found dead at his Munandi Farm in Beatrice was buried at Glen Forest Memorial Park in Harare yesterday.
Harare Provincial Affairs Minister Miriam Chikukwa laid wreaths on behalf of President Mugabe and Vice-Presidents Emmerson Mnangagwa and Phelekezela Mphoko.
Also present were former Cabinet ministers Olivia Muchena and Dzikamai Mavhaire, Mbare National Assembly representative Cde Tendai Savanhu and former Zanu-PF Harare provincial youth chair Jim Kunaka.
The funeral was State-assisted.
Minister Chikukwa described the Epworth legislator and ex-Zanu-PF Harare provincial chair as quiet and dedicated to service.
She took a swipe at sections of the media, which alleged that President Mugabe had snubbed the funeral, saying the African Union and sadc Chair has numerous continental commitments.
“We don’t want people who cause confusion in Government and the party. Who are you? Are you the one who made President Mugabe appoint him Ambassador and to various Cabinet portfolios as minister?” she queried.
At the funeral, corporate executive and Ambassador Midzi’s long-time friend Mr Joe Mutizwa said: “I have known this man for the past 42 years and we were together when we left the University of Rhodesia in 1975. We were also together when we were detained at WhaWha from 1975 to 1978. He was our natural leader; he was fearless.”
Ambassador Midzi (62) was found dead in his car on Tuesday in a suspected suicide case. A post-mortem revealed that he died of poisoning and toxicology analysis results are expected in two weeks.
The analysis aims to determine whether the quantity of poison found in his body was sufficient to be fatal.
Ambassador Midzi is survived by wife Alice and three children.
