AME Church gives Christmas cheer to less privileged

THE African Methodist Episcopal Church, Gumtree Station, located in the Bulawayo City Centre, recently held a Christmas party for the underprivileged, distributing food hampers to 30 individuals in need.

The annual programme, spearheaded by the Women’s Missionary Society (WMS), has been running for 14 years, providing support to vulnerable members of the community.

“This programme was started by WMS members in 2011 and has stood the test of time,” said Mrs Josephine Ginya, president of the Gumtree WMS.

“We have women who are passionate about feeding the less privileged, and every month they put their resources together to make a difference. They also source support from other members of the community and the church as a whole has also joined in with each member contributing to the feeding fund every month,” she said.

The church supports individuals identified in the Bulawayo community, including people living with disabilities.

“We will continue to assist where we can. We are God’s children and we must show love to one another. Today we gave food hampers that included mealie-meal, cooking oil, sugar, salt, beans, matemba fish and soya chunks. We also prepared refreshments for everyone since it’s our last feeding day of the year.”

A beneficiary who identified himself as Nkala, a wheelchair user, expressed gratitude for the church’s ongoing support.

“I am happy to be here today to receive the Christmas food hamper. This church has been doing this for a long time and it goes a long way. May God continue to bless this church.”
