AMONG THE GIANTS

Sports Reporter

ZIMBABWE was one of the 64 countries in the world who were represented in the last English Premiership season whose championship was won by Liverpool.

Marshall Munetsi joined the Big League when he moved to Wolverhampton from French side Stade Reims in January this year.

Zimbabwe has a rich history with the English Premiership dating back to the inaugural season back in 1992.

Peter Ndlovu became the first African player to feature in the Premiership when he was still playing for Coventry City.

Before the era of the Premiership, goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar was a regular feature in the old Division One League and a regular winner of the championship with Liverpool.

Zambia were also represented in the last Premiership season by striker Patson Daka who played for relegated Leicester City.

Despite arriving at Wolves in January, Munetsi clocked impressive figures in terms of minutes on the field as he ended the season having played 1079 minutes.

He arrived at a Wolves side, which faced the possibility of being relegated, but by the end of the season, the team was in a very safe spot.

Daka clocked 721 minutes for Leicester despite starting the season at the club in August last year.

The absence of South Africa among the countries who were represented in the English Premiership last season did not go down well with some of the country’s football fans.

The South Africans have always considered themselves as the Big Brother of football in Southern Africa.

To their credit, their national and other representative teams have been doing well in recent years on the continent with Mamelodi Sundowns now considered one of the top four clubs in Africa.

Bafana Bafana have also been punching according to their weight while their representative junior national teams have been writing some success stories.

But, the reality remains that there wasn’t even a single South African football in the English Premiership last season.

They will certainly have one next season when Lyle Foster returns with Burnley.

Fans from all over the world have been having their say after the Premier League provided the statistics on their social media platforms.
