An intimate encounter with nature

Andrew Mangwarara

THIS week, we feature the Forestry Commission of Zimbabwe, which was established in 1954 to protect and regulate the country’s 0,8 percent of forestry land.

The commission oversees forest utilisation, manages gazetted indigenous forests and promotes community and commercial agroforestry through research, extension services and seedling production.

The organisation’s head office stands as proof of their work.

Within its grounds, they have preserved a variety of both indigenous and exotic trees, creating a place of rest and comfort. They have made it their mission to provide spaces for relaxation, with benches scattered throughout the gardens for employees to unwind.

Duranta hedges line the pathways, offering a striking contrast of colour against the lush green backdrop.

Pots filled with vibrant plants add further beauty, while small features throughout the garden invite visitors to connect intimately with nature.

This close encounter with nature underscores why trees must be preserved and why the commission carries the mandate to safeguard our forests.

Forests play a vital role in sustaining life.

They trap underground water reserves, release water vapour into the atmosphere and purify the air by absorbing carbon emissions.

The very existence of countless species depends on forest ecosystems.

Without trees, life on earth would face extinction.

Beyond environmental benefits, trees help fight climate change, ensure food security and boost nutrition for communities.

They also provide livelihoods for many people. It is, therefore, essential to empower the younger generation to understand the importance of trees and preserve them.

The commission actively teaches communities to plant trees for the future, especially during national initiatives such as the Tree Planting Day, held annually on the first Saturday of December.
