Government should prioritise the availability of top dressing fertilisers and exigencies in case of pest outbreaks as the agricultural season moves into the second phase.
This comes as uneasiness is growing over erratic rains threatening the condition of crops.
Farmers have also expressed concern at the high cost of inputs and spares, which saw some of them applying less Compound D fertiliser. In an interview, Mhangura farmer Mr Shakesmore Kudya said: “The situation this season is proving to be very difficult for us farmers because we have had to apply less fertilisers owing to the high cost. We need more support to salvage the season. Things just changed to put into jeopardy every plan we had for the season.” Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union second vice president Mr Berean Mukwende said Government should move to salvage the season by ensuring the availability of top dressing.
“Most farmers, even those supported under various Government programmes did not get the desired quantities of Compound D fertilisers.
