POLITICAL analysts have described the threats made by MDC-T leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai to war veterans, traditional leaders and some Government officials as disgraceful especially coming from a political leader. Mr Tsvangirai threatened to punish war veterans, traditional leaders and some Government officials if he is elected into office in the forthcoming harmonised elections.
He accused war veterans and traditional leaders of victimising his supporters. Mr Tsvangirai has also in the past threatened to deal with service chiefs once he gets into office.
“Such comments are not expected from a person vying to be president of a country. Zimbabweans do not want to be associated with such leadership.
“While President Mugabe is busy preaching unity, peace and reconciliation, Mr Tsvangirai is spreading hate,” said University of Zimbabwe lecturer Dr Charity Manyeruke.
Another analyst Mr Christopher Gwatidzo, a lecturer at Midlands State University, said Mr Tsvangirai’s statements confirm his uncaring attitude.
“First he said ‘vanhu varikungomera kunge howa’ (people are growing like mushrooms) when Zimbabweans were engaged in the land reform. He also called for economic sanctions on Zimbabwe whose effects are evident.
He also urged the South African government to disconnect electricity supplies to Zimbabwe. He has been calling for the suffering of Zimbabweans,” he said.
He said one could not understand why Mr Tsvangirai wants to rule a poor people. “He has been consistent in wanting Zimbabweans to suffer. He makes statements like ‘murikuti murikushaya chikafu, muchanyatsoshaisisa’.
“With all due respect, Zimbabweans should distinguish who is a caring leader between Tsvangirai and President Mugabe who sacrificed himself for the independence of the country,” he said.
Economist and businessman Mr Jonathan Kadzura said the sentiments by Mr Tsvangirai were a result of his failure to sell his party’s manifesto to Zimbabweans. “What he is doing is negative campaigning. He has nothing to offer to the people, so he goes around threatening people to create an aura of authority which he does not have. He has no real agenda to solve the Zimbabwean problem,” he said.
