MDC-T supporters yesterday allegedly burnt a hut belonging to Goromonzi North Zanu-PF district treasurer Cde Jestina Machila of Chinyani Village, leaving the widow without food. Some of the MDC-T suspects are related to Cde Machila.Cde Machila said she lost all her kitchen utensils, stoves, kitchen unit, eight 50kg bags of maize, rice and other food stuffs.
“At around 3am, I woke up after I heard my dogs barking.
“When I woke up I saw my hut in flames and alerted my son-in-law Willard Zhuwau, who tried to put out the fire.
“We failed to put out the fire and only managed to save the upper part of the wooden door while the rest of the household goods were destroyed to ashes,” she said.
Cde Machila said this was not the first time that she had been attacked by MDC-T supporters.
In 2010, Cde Machila had her hut destroyed by fire and she lost three television sets and property worth thousands of dollars.
“I am now living in fear. At the moment I do not have livestock as the animals were poisoned. The dispute is getting worse each year and I am living in fear,” she said.
Cde Machila said she lost her national identity card in the fire and was hurt she was going to have difficulties voting for President Robert Mugabe.
Cde Machila’s aunt, Mrs Wadzanayi Chinyani, said MDC-T supporters came in the afternoon and started throwing their posters at her homestead and putting posters on Cde Machila’s fence to provoke her.
“Everyone has the right to support a party of their choice but the MDC-T supporters are punishing us for supporting Zanu-PF.
“I am afraid the rowdy youths may come back and attack Cde Machila because she is a widow and has no one to protect her,” she said.
Cde Machila said she was going to seek assistance from the police so that she could cast her vote tomorrow.
Police have confirmed receiving reports and said investigations were underway.
