Angola, Mozambique to miss teachers’ games

The two countries felt that their representatives would be badly affected by the language barrier in a festival that brings in a host of English-speaking countries.
Athletes from five SADC countries – South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Swaziland and Namibia – started arriving in Zimbabwe yesterday.

The Zimbabwe Teachers Association chief executive, Sisiso Ndlovu, said all was now set for the start of the festival.
“The athletes will compete in four categories – athletics, soccer, netball and volleyball – at Belvedere Teachers College.

“Our team is expected to go in camp this morning after national representatives were selected at last week’s inter-provincial finals.
“Swaziland hosted the tournament last year and we did fairly well in athletics and soccer where we won one match and drew the rest,” said Ndlovu.
“We have some delegates who are coming in today (yesterday) and they will set the platform for the Games.

“The team is strong and we are looking forward to an improved performance in netball and volleyball, which is mainly dominated by Botswana.
“We have a youthful team and we have a good chance.”
