BULAWAYO’S running community is gearing up for a milestone race on December 21 as the 10km event celebrates its 10th anniversary with a new home at Nkulumane Shopping Complex. The organisers want this year’s edition to feel bigger and more accessible, and the shift from the city centre brings the race into the heart of the suburbs where most of its athletes live and train.
Registration is now open at the Liquor Hub shop between Fourth and Fifth Avenue along Fife Street in Bulawayo. Seniors pay five dollars and juniors pay three.
The race closes the Bulawayo Athletics Board calendar for 2025 and is expected to draw many of the country’s top long-distance specialists.
Proceeds again support Bulawayo’s elderly. It is a tradition driven by Liquor Hub Wholesale proprietor and Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce Raj Modi, whose past contributions have included paying for life-saving treatment for children who needed specialist care outside the country.
BAB chairperson Watson Madanyika said preparations are running well and the board is ready for a strong field.
“We are fully prepared for this milestone edition,” Madanyika said. “Our logistics, security and technical teams are already in place, and we are working closely with our partners to ensure athletes and spectators enjoy a well-organised, safe and exciting race. We expect a strong turnout and are ready to host everyone at Nkulumane.”
“This being the 10th anniversary, we want it to be memorable, and we have tightened all operational areas from route management to medical support to make sure the event runs smoothly. We are confident the community will come out in their numbers to support the athletes and celebrate this important sporting tradition.”
Last year’s race delivered sharp competition. Wayne Kabondo and Caroline Mhandu took the top honours. Kabondo, running for Mr Pace Athletics Club, won the men’s title in 29 minutes 32 seconds. Munyaradzi Zizhou chased him all the way and finished two seconds behind. Martin Mutsapa crossed in 30 minutes 03 seconds.
In the women’s field, Zimbabwe Correctional Services runner Mhandu controlled the pace from early on and finished in 36 minutes 06 seconds. Ethel Pangiso followed home in 37 minutes 16 seconds and Tulange Mudenda completed the podium in 37 minutes 43 seconds.
