LAMU — Kenyan authorities have beefed up security within the Lamu archipelago and the entire coastal region as the annual tourism festival event kicked off yesterday.
Divisional Police Commander, Joseph Sigei said foreign security agents have also joined in beefing up security during the ceremony in the coastal resort town that was graced by tourism industry stakeholders from various countries including high profile government officials.
“We have intensified operations both land and sea to ensure the festival is not interrupted. We are also stepping up surveillance where thousands of visitors, including foreigners are expected to reside,” Sigei told Xinhua by telephone.
Sigei said British naval troops are assisting Kenya in heightening security to avert any possible attack that might be carried by Al-Shabaab terror group.
Dozens of plain clothes police officers drawn from anti terrorism unit have also been dispatched to the island to beef up security in public places, mainly hotels and lodges. — Xinhua.
