ANOPAISHE GADZIKWA, a Grade Two pupil at Eaglesvale Preparatory School in Harare, is a young chess prodigy who has gained recognition for his exceptional skill at a very young age.

Gadzikwa recently broke the school’s records by becoming the youngest player ever to represent the school’s first team.

Normally, the school’s first team is a preserve for Grade Six and Seven learners.

The talented player had a phenomenal season, remaining undefeated throughout the entire Harare Chess League matches.

He played 10 games, won eight and drew the other two.

His talent then led him to represent his school at the Chess Olympiad, where he was crowned one of the best players in his age group.

He was placed second in the under-10 age group.

He played five games, won four and lost one.

Most recently, he represented Zimbabwe at the African Youth Chess Championship held in Harare.

Of the nine games, he won four and was timed out in the other five.

Mrs Precious Zembe, the Eaglesvale Preparatory School acting head, is proud of her learner.

“Anopaishe put our school on the international map. We are proud of him,” Mrs Zembe said.

Praise Ndlovu, the school’s chess coach, said the young player’s future holds great promise.

“He is not only talented, but also hardworking. His future is very bright,” Ndlovu said.
