Following the successful showcase of the country’s arts and culture by Sandra Ndebele and Songs of Lozikeyi in Dubai, another group from Bulawayo, Umkhathi Theatre Works is in India where they are representing the country at the Surajkund International Crafts Mela.
The award-winning group left the country last Friday for the festival that started on Saturday and will end on April 4. Touted as the world’s largest craft fair, the Surajkund International Crafts Mela is an annual event that returned this year after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Umkhathi Theatre Works travelled with 10 members, Matesu Dube, Ishmael Muvingi, Maqhawe Moyo, Fidelis Tshuma, Hebson Chigodora Ncube, Martin Khumalo, Dumisani Sibanda, Lorin Sibanda, Beauty Matshawila and Patience Maseko.
Speaking from New Delhi, the group’s founder Dube said they are geared up for the festival and are looking forward to learning and exchanging cultures with groups from around the world.
“We’re in New Delhi, India where we’re performing at the Surajkund Mela festival. The festival includes crafts and traditional performances. Already, we’ve met groups from Ghana, Mozambique, Nigeria, Swaziland, Sudan and Niger and are looking forward to a great time here,” he said.
Dube said they were selected to participate by the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Arts and Recreation through the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe.
“We’re the third group from Zimbabwe to participate in this festival. Our first performance is today (yesterday) and we’re geared for it.
This experience is good, especially taking note that borders have been closed for the past two years. It’s good to once again be able to meet new people and make friends.”
