Journeyman Roderick “The Prince” Mutuma was the life saver for his new club FC Saint-Eloi Lupopo in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) when his solitary goal broke a 11-year jinx for his paymasters.
Far off the radar of Zimbabwe Warriors selectors, Mutuma is on a trail to prove his critics wrong. Will “The Prince” graduate to Kingship?
“I need to prove to my critics that my career was not yet over,” he said from the DRC.
Simply known as FC Lupopo to its supporters, the Lubumbashi-based club, won by a goal to nil against giants TP Mazembe for the first time in over a decade.
He moved to the club early this year on a two-year contract after Nichrut FC, a Shurugwi-based former Premier Soccer League club, folded due to high costs of running a professional football club.
For the talent he has, money has never loved him. But this time around, a steady income is an incentive enough to bang the goals.
“I also needed a steady income that would be paid on time every month, something that FC Lupopo promised.
“It’s a promise they have kept since I joined them, we are paid in US dollars, which is another big plus,” Mutuma said.
Mutuma concedes that hopping from one club to another led his critics to conclude that his career had reached its sell-by date.
From Dynamos, Bloemfontein Celtics in South Africa, Caps United, Highlanders and Nichrut FC, Mutuma resembled the proverbial rolling stone that gathers no moss.
“I needed a challenge and FC Lupopo came knocking at the right time. It was time to try out new things and I had no problem moving to DRC. My family has not visited yet but I will be home very soon,” said Mutuma.
The DRC league ends in May.
His contract expires in December 2020. He will be 32 years old.
