Another eight people killed in road traffic accident

POLICE have confirmed the death of eight people after a bus they were travelling in collided with a haulage truck along the Gokwe-Kwekwe Road this Wednesday morning.
The bus, which had 36 passengers on board, tried to overtake another vehicle before being involved in a head-on collision with the truck at the 110km peg.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed.
“The ZRP confirms the death of eight people in a fatal road traffic accident which occurred today at 0500 hours at the 110 km peg along Gokwe -Kwekwe Road towards Kwekwe. A Trip-Trans bus with 36 passengers tried to overtake and collided with a haulage truck. More details to be released in due course,” he said.
The accident comes after police in Hwange have arrested the driver of the Toyota Noah involved in Saturday’s fatal road accident at Deka Bridge, killing eight Roman Catholic congregants.
The accident occurred at around 7am last Saturday along Deka Road near Hwange when the vehicle reportedly lost control while crossing the bridge and plunged into Deka River.
It was carrying 13 congregants returning from an all-night prayer vigil.
Police said eight victims died after the vehicle was submerged under water. Five survivors were rescued and taken to Hwange Colliery Hospital for treatment.
President Mnangagwa has since declared the Deka Bridge road traffic accident in Hwange District a State of Disaster, in terms of the Civil Protection Act.
Declaration of a State of Disaster enables the Government to mobilise and coordinate the necessary support and resources required to assist the affected families, facilitate funeral assistance for the deceased, and provide medical support to the injured survivors.
Another six people died when a Honda Fit and a Haulage Truck collided, at the 223 kilometre peg along the Harare–Bulawayo road near Redcliff turn-off at 1745 hours on May 25, 2026.
