The AmaKhosi’s 2-0 victory over Chippa United on Saturday was their 21st victory of the campaign, the best yet since the Premier Soccer League was reduced to 16 teams in the 2002/03 campaign.
It is one game more than Mamelodi Sundowns won when they claimed the league title last season and is perhaps a sign of the widening gap between the front two and the rest of the league.
It is another feather in the cap of coach Stuart Baxter, who has engineered results with a thin squad and by his own admission a striker light during the campaign.
It is the second league record for the club this season after their 69 points is also a record for the 30-game campaign. That beat the mark of 65 set by Sundowns in 2013/14.
“We started the league season brilliantly, going on a fantastic 19-game unbeaten run and winning the MTN8,” Baxter told reporters. “However, at the beginning of this year we gave our nearest chasers Mamelodi Sundowns a bit of hope by dropping points.
“However, just when Sundowns got a sniff, the guys picked themselves up, winning five league matches on the trot towards the end of the season.”
The league win is a South African record 12th for Chiefs, who are three ahead of both Orlando Pirates and Sundowns. — SuperSport
