Another university for Masvingo

Morgenster Mission in Masvingo.
This will be Masvingo Province’s second university after the State-run Great Zimbabwe University.
The church was initially granted a charter to set up Great Zimbabwe University in 2004 but the institution suffered a stillbirth after Government took over the name and gave it to the State-owned institution. The Reformed Church in Zimbabwe has been battling to get a charter to set up a private university at Morgenster Mission.
The idea to have a private university was mooted 10 years ago.
Reformed Church in Zimbabwe moderator Reverend Enos Chomutiri, last Friday said their dream to set up a private university would come true soon.
“We are excited that Government has finally given us an amended charter that will enable us to roll out our university plan and we are very grateful for the move because we already have a place to house the new institution (Morgenster Mission) in the interim.
“What is left for us is to mobilise the requisite financial resources for the project,” said Rev Chomutiri.
He said that the church was still working out the total cost to set up the new university, adding that their Morgenster Mission location had already been assessed by the relevant authorities to gauge its readiness and suitability to house a university.
Morgenster Mission at the moment houses a teacher training college, primary school and a hospital all owned by the Reformed Church of Zimbabwe.
The Reformed Church of Zimbabwe first established a university in Masvingo in 2004 but the institution was bogged down by a myriad of problems including degree programmes that were described as substandard.
