ZIMBABWE Youth Innovative and Creative Alliance (ZYICA) is set to launch an anti-drug project titled ‘Youth Against Drug Abuse’ at Dzivaresekwa 3 community hall today.
The event will be held in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, Harare City Council and Social Services Department. Targeting at least 500 youths, the event is set to be attended by community leaders, churches and corporates. The programme will be running under the theme “Empowered Youths, Sober Minds and Brighter Futures”.
ZYICA executive director, Lennox Gondo, said the symposium is aimed at raising awareness among the youth and community on drug abuse.
“It is our aim that through this programme we will reduce the rate of drug abuse, particularly in the creative sector, and various individuals in the community.
“We also want to create empowered youths who can live a drug-free lifestyle and strengthen the capacity of our community social workers and leaders in addressing drug-related issues,” said Gondo.
Following the launch, the initiative is also set to be extended to other neighbourhoods and will target about 2,000 youths.
“We will be taking this programme to Mbare, Mabvuku and Highfields. We are targeting an estimated 500 youths per outreach, reaching a broader audience of young people and stakeholders.”
Former ZBC News anchor, Oscar Pambuka, and Dzivaresekwa sungura artist Bothwell Butau, who are both ex-drug addicts, are set to grace the stage.
“They will share their experiences when using drugs and their testimonials are anticipated to turn the lives of victims around.
“Also set to perform are Empress Massina, Dyllano, Emmanuel Chakanyuka and Rising Empire Dance Group,” said Gondo.
