As Zimbabwe prepares to celebrate Independence Day on Saturday April 18, the Broad Alliance Against Sanctions (BAAS), which is camped outside the American Embassy in Westgate, has reaffirmed its commitment to defending the nation’s sovereignty and development against illegal sanctions imposed on Harare.

In a statement, BAAS chairperson Calvern Chitsunge emphasised that sanctions undermine Zimbabwe’s independence gains.

He pledged support for legislative measures to safeguard sovereignty.

“April 18th stands as a testament to the courage, resilience, and sacrifice of Zimbabweans who fought for sovereignty and self-determination,” he said.

“As we maintain our peaceful vigil against illegal sanctions, we reaffirm our unwavering support for Zimbabwe’s independence, sovereignty, and right to development.”

The statement linked the alliance’s activism to the broader national vision, arguing that sanctions obstruct progress toward prosperity.

“The Broad Alliance Against Sanctions further pledges its full support for the Constitutional Amendment Bill Number 3, which is a vital step in safeguarding the gains of our hard-won independence,” read the statement..

“May this day renew the nation’s unity, prosperity, and resolve as you continue guiding Zimbabwe toward a brighter future.”

Mr Chitsunge emphasised that the vigil is a patriotic duty, aligning BAAS’s mission with national celebrations and the President’s leadership.

“On behalf of the Broad Alliance Against Sanctions, I extend heartfelt congratulations to the Republic of Zimbabwe on the occasion of Independence Day. Wishing the Government, and all Zimbabweans, a joyous and dignified celebration,” he said.
