Walter Nyamukondiwa in KAZANGARARE
The leader of a Johanne Masowe apostolic sect in Kazangarare, Mashonaland West, has returned to Zanu PF from CCC together with some of his church members.
Madzibaba Toendepi Kamhandu renounced his CCC membership, saying he was returning home, to Zanu PF.
A known MDC-T stalwart in the area before the split resulting in the formation of the CCC, Madzibaba Kamhandu said he could not resist anymore the prophecies of the founders of the apostolic sect.
“It happens that sometimes you lose your way because of various reasons, but what is important is that I have retraced my footsteps back to Zanu PF.
“The community and church members have been very supportive after we returned to Zanu PF. I have been resisting even when the spirit and the prophecies delivered in the 1930s about supporting the governing party and President (Mnangagwa) were known to me.”
Another church leader, Madzibaba Derrick Sabawu, said supporting Zanu PF and President Mnangagwa was a duty for believers.
They both confirmed their move before a 200-member strong congregation on Friday last week.
“We knew what we needed to do but we resisted the word that was the foundation of our belief as taught by Baba Johanne.
“We need to follow and support the Government of the day. We should support our President, National Assembly representative, Senator and Councillor,” said Madzibaba Sabawu.
Ward 9 Councillor Dickson Jani, who won the Hurungwe Rural District Council seat on a Zanu PF ticket against Madzibaba Kamhandu, welcomed the development.
“I contested against Madzibaba Kamhandu in 2018 and I couldn’t believe it when our Commissar, Cde Kaunda, told me that Madzibaba had rejoined Zanu PF,” said Clr Jani.
“We are happy as it only helps to strengthen the party ahead of the 2023 harmonised elections.”
The Zanu PF commissariat department said it had taken a long time to convince the church leaders to join Zanu PF.
“It was not an easy thing as the church leaders were committed to the opposition, but we continued talking to them and showing them the goodness of Zanu PF and its leader President Mnangagwa,” said Cde Kaunda.
The switch of the sect members has come as a shock to some villagers who knew how the church leaders were committed to the opposition cause over the years.
Zanu PF is on a campaign to attract more, new voters so that its target of five million votes for President Mnangagwa is attained.
On Saturday, Forever Associates Zimbabwe (FAZ) Trust members in Zvimba South Constituency held a voter mobilisation drive in Banket.
To attract many people, a soccer match was played between Banket United and Dynamos Division 2 at Banket Stadium.
The match ended 1-all and both teams received US$1 750 for their efforts.
An all-night musical gig was later held in the same stadium on Saturday, with various artistes, including Romeo Gasa and Poptain.
FAZ team leader Mrs Winnie Tapfumaneyi said: “We are happy that for the first time since 1963, Dynamos Football Club are in Banket for a soccer match.
“Sporting events such as football help keep youths away from drugs, which are being abused by many youths in the country. We are using sport and music to encourage people to register as voters and vote for President Mnangagwa who has bought a lot of development in Zimbabwe.”
