fabulous gifts that were obtained over the holidays. Aren’t we all ecstatic about fashion trends that popped up last season?
Colour blocking took centre stage over the festive holidays and the young generation went wild with bright colours. It did not end with the clothes but over the top, hair and make-up too.
We saw a lot of bright coloured nails, eye make-up and accessories that gave outfits that sass up look. Careful analysis of what is in fashion gives an idea that wild is the new hot.
With this in mind we all need to know when to tone it down, especially when it is school time. The rules of most educational institutions require students to be thoroughly neat from head to toe.
Cool Lifestyle took time to seek expert advice on the best ways to use cosmetics that is appropriate for teenagers.
Jean Mare, a qualified cosmetologist from a beauty parlour in the city centre, gave her professional advice on teens and make-up.
“The most important thing to realise is that as young people in their adolescence, they should not overdo it when it comes to make-up.
“Emphasis should be put on cleanliness as one should be presentable the whole day. They also need to realise that since they are in their teens, a lot of activities are going on in their bodies as they prepare for adulthood.
“A lot of teens tend to experiment with cosmetics as a way of getting rid of pimples or acne that breaks out on their skins. At times they make the situation worse because they end up reacting to the chemicals in the cosmetics,” she said.
The beautician also emphasised that washing one’s face with an ordinary clinical face wash is all that is needed when one is having troubles with acne.
“Use of cosmetics that are meant for adult skin types are not recommended for teenagers because their skin type is fragile,” she said.
Teens were also warned to stay away from face powders, eye shadows and trimming eyebrows.
“Face powders are an absolute no for more reasons than one. Just like trimming eyebrows, they make teens look way older than they are. Face powders also have the danger of spoiling uniforms because they come in different shades of brown.
“A teenager’s face is supposed to be bubbly with their natural facial oils that give them a youthful look,” she said.
With all this in mind, applying eye shadows, face powders and trimming lashes is also not cool for teens because such cosmetics require one to be a pro in the application.
This reporter has bumped into young girls with awkwardly trimmed eyebrows and contrary to what they will be thinking they will be looking trashy.
“The best make-up for teenage girls of school- going age are face lotions and lip gloss. Vanishing creams should be avoided because they make a person look like a ghost if not properly applied.
“Gels can also be used to apply lightly on eyebrows and one can use a tail comb to shape them the way they like. Hair gel should be applied moderately to ensure that one’s hair does not become too greasy,” said Jean.
Teens should always remember to keep their hair nicely combed and use hair pins to scrunches to keep long hair or braids nicely tucked.
Painting nails or having manicures done is not the way to go. A nail filler and polish remover should be a teen’s best friend.
Teens should make use of nail polish remover to remove polish on nails. Nail polish is not OK. Scrapping it off leaves out patches that look scruffy.
