BULAWAYO’S Archers social pool club is encouraging family men to engage in social activities, especially sports in order to stay fit. Formed in January this year, Archers consists of 22 members who include Rahman Gumbo (Chicken Inn Coach), Omega Sibanda (Nafaz vice-president), former Highlanders chairman Ernest “Maphepha” Sibanda, Guy Muzanargwo who is club chairperson, Philip Stanley, who is club treasurer, Mabvuto Mukumba who is pool coach, Joe Tshuma, who is MP for Mpopoma Pelandaba Constituency and Tawanda Ruvize, formerly director of Premiership team Quelaton, among others.
The club treasurer, Stanley said the club was formed after discovering that there are few social activities in the city, and there was a need to introduce more new sports to increase social activities in the community. “We formed Archers after realising that there was lack of social activities in the community, the club now has 22 members. As the club, we’re looking forward to introduce more sports like soccer, netball just to mention a few,” he said.
Archers have played a number of games in and outside the city. They have battled it out with teams like Inyathi social club and also the Army team from Imbizo Barracks.According to the club coach, Mabvuto Mukumba, it’s so far so good for his team as they prepare for their next games. “The team is not bad at the moment, we managed to play with Inyathi social club in which we lost both games 8-7. We also played with the Army team from Imbizo Barracks and we outclassed them 8-11 and we are preparing for our return match against the Army at Llewellin this Saturday, a team which is good in doubles,” he said.
Archers is encouraging other clubs to join the social league because “the bigger it grows, the more exciting it gets.”
“As we get older we leave the youngsters to play competitive pool. We are still open to new members,” said Muzanargwo.
