ARE Chegutu Pirates slipping down the leagues the way Luton Town crashed down from the English Premiership into League One in the past two seasons?
Marvelous Nakamba’s Luton Town are now in the third-tier League One after they were relegated from the Championship at the end of last season.
Luton had started the season as one of the favourites after having arrived from the Premiership.
However, the Hatters found the going tough and, despite firing Rob Edwards, the coach who had taken them into the Premiership, their fortunes didn’t improve.
It appears Chegutu Pirates are going down that route. Zaire were the toast of Mashonaland West when they defied the odds to break into the Premiership at the end of the 2023 football season.
Despite running on a very small budget, the Pirates flexed their muscles and punched above their weight to qualify for the domestic Premiership.
However, after being barred from using Pfupajena, they struggled playing their home matches at Baobab and they were relegated after only one season in the top-flight league.
They were expected to do well in Division One but, so far, the going has been tough for them.
At the beginning of the season they hired the legendary Moses Chunga, a man who is known to favour younger players.
This meant that veterans like Simba Domingo had to look for other clubs.
Pirates are second from the bottom-of-the-table after their latest defeat – a 0-1 loss to Cranborne Bullets at Commando Barracks yesterday.
Pirates have won only two games of the 10 they have played, they have drawn two and lost six.
They have the same number of points (eight) as bottom club MWOS Under-19.
AGAMA are top the table with 25 points from 11 games after a 2-0 win over Ngezi Platinum Stars on the road.
Nesbert “Yabo” Saruchera’s N’ombeyaora are in second place, just a point behind, after a 1-0 win over Trojan at Rufaro yesterday.
Golden Eagles are also doing well and are in third place after a 2-1 win over Zambezi Gas yesterday.
