ARENEL Movers played their hearts out in a match against Highlanders, one day after their club vice-chairperson, Bheka “Mahii” Sibanda, passed away.

The two teams observed a moment of silence before the match in his memory.

Despite not having the chance to say their goodbyes to Mahii, Arenel managed to pay their respects while playing a match in a place that he dearly loved.

The match ended in a goalless draw, and after the match, both teams took time to go and pay their respects to the family.

The late Mahii is known for his passion and support for Highlanders and his interest in holding a leadership position in the executive.

Mahii collapsed and died on Saturday morning at the age of 49.

“We dedicate this game to him. I said to my boys, this guy did great things for the team in a short space of time. He helped us a lot and I’m so emotional.

“The last time we spoke, he called me on Friday and said ‘Coach, these boys have to be smart, make sure by 1pm they have put on tracksuits’. I didn’t know it was our last conversation, it’s so sad. But, God decides and I said to the boys, look, let’s go and play in honour of him,” said Tawachera.

Highlanders chairman Kenneth Mhlophe described Mahii as a man of the people who will be remembered for his good deeds and passion for football.

Mhlophe said it is a huge loss, not only for the Highlanders and Arenel families, but for the entire football fraternity as Mahii loved and followed the game passionately.

“As the Bosso family we are deeply saddened by the passing of Sibanda who was a passionate follower of the club and did his best to contribute to the success of the club,” he said.

He assisted the club’s developmental sides and ball boys, and was influential in all the club’s projects.

Sibanda lost twice in a bid to be an executive committee member at Highlanders.

Burial arrangements are yet to be revealed.
