Sikhumbuzo Moyo in Binga
BINGA has the highest number of unregistered schools in the country, with 101 primary and secondary schools operating without registration, a situation that has prompted Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerayi Moyo to embark on a tour of schools in the district.
Minister Moyo yesterday toured mostly satellite schools in Binga, where he interacted with teachers and assessed learning conditions, including observing a Form Three Agriculture lesson at Chasamba Secondary School.
Addressing teachers at Musenampongo Satellite Secondary School, Minister Moyo said the high number of unregistered schools in Binga was a major concern for the Government.
“Binga has the highest number of unregistered schools in the country. We have 71 unregistered primary schools and 30 unregistered secondary schools. We are extremely concerned by these statistics,” said Minister Moyo.
He said learners at unregistered schools were unable to sit for public examinations at their institutions, forcing them to travel long distances to registered examination centres.
“Because these schools are unregistered, they do not offer public examinations. Learners are forced to travel more than 20 kilometres to and from examination centres every day to write their examinations,” he said.
Minister Moyo said the long distances travelled by learners could negatively affect their performance in public examinations.
The minister is expected to wrap up his visit to Matabeleland North today by addressing school heads from across the province at Coalfields Primary School in Hwange.
