Armed robber shot dead

A 30-YEAR-OLD armed robber and carjacker from Masvingo’s Zimuto area was shot dead in a shoot-out with the police last week.
Masvingo police spokesperson Chief Inspector Peter Zhanero said the incident happened on Wednesday at around 6pm.
The deceased has been identified as Tinashe Pedzisai Hinga of Zimuto Village.
“I can confirm receiving a report to that effect but we are still yet to get the finer details of what transpired. I will come back to you as soon as I have the facts,” he said.

According to police sources, Hinga allegedly robbed a Kwekwe man of his vehicle, a Honda Vitz ADE 0458, red in colour on Friday last week and drove towards Masvingo.

Police from Chatsworth Station in Gutu tracked Hinga and on Wednesday they received a tip off to the effect that a car was spotted parked in a bush in Zimuto Village under Chief Zimuto.

“When they reached the bush, they laid an ambush but Hinga identified them from afar and opened fire while in the car. Police fired back and hit Hinga on the backbone,” he said.

Undeterred, Hinga sped off in a terrific speed but after travelling for about 300m, he dumped the car and disappeared into the bush.
“Hinga sustained serious injuries on his backbone but he managed to flee and disappeared. Later on, word reached his family that he was injured and in the bush after which some relatives hatched a plan on how they could attend to him while in the bush. They tried to nurse him in the bush but he later died,” he said.

Police recovered the car dumped in the bush and some dynamite in the car, apparently used to break safes.
Hinga’s body was taken to Masvingo General Hospital mortuary for a post- mortem.
