A mine owner in Concession recently turned the tables on four armed robbers who had pounced on him and his wife when he fatally shot one of them, resulting in the other three fleeing from the scene.
The mine owner is Mirica Chamanga (49), who owns Gigue Mine. The provincial police spokesperson, Sergeant Major Samuel Chikasha, said the incident happened on Monday, November 11, this year, at around 9:30 pm.
He said Chamanga and his wife Chinai (48) retired to bed after securing all doors and windows.
At around 2 am on Tuesday, Mirica was awakened by the noise of someone tampering with their door.
The four-armed robbers forced their way into the couple’s bedroom. They were armed with a Retay MOD 92 9mm pistol serial number R1YREROYS01-2402357, an axe, and a screwdriver.
They ordered the couple to lie down, remain silent, and comply with their instructions. Chinai asked to be allowed to dress, and the four started to assault her.
This gave Mirica a chance to reach for his Walter 9mm pistol, which was under his bed. He managed to cork it and fired at one of the accused persons who was holding a gun.
He shot him once in the head, and he fell while his colleagues fled.
Mirica went outside and fired two more shots to scare the gang away and alert their neighbours.
He discovered that the armed robbers had poisoned their dogs, and one had already died. The police attended the scene and found the robber lying in a pool of blood on the floor, groaning.
The loaded pistol with six blank cartridges was recovered beside him. Unknown powder was recovered in a plastic bag in the accused person’s pocket.
He was rushed to Concession Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Mirica is a holder of a valid firearm certificate.
