POLICE in Shurugwi are investigating a case of robbery and kidnapping in which three armed robbers raided two homesteads in the Abefonye Farm area and made off with US$4,030 in cash and approximately 9.6 grammes of gold amalgam, among other valuables.
Midlands Provincial Police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the incident occurred on August 31 at about 1am.
“Two homesteads were raided and robbed of money in cash totalling US$4,030, approximately 9.6 grammes of gold amalgam, two cellphones, a gold metal detector and a Honda Fit motor vehicle,” Insp Mahoko said.
According to police, the suspects, who were armed with machetes and a sjambok, first targeted the home of Buhle Nyathi, 44.
“They allegedly forced open the door of the first victim using a metal bar and gained entry. They assaulted her and demanded money,” Insp Mahoko said.
He said the robbers reportedly took US$900 in cash and a Hisense cellphone before proceeding to another hut at the same homestead.
“They then abducted her 14-year-old son and forced him to lead them to another homestead,” Insp Mahoko added.
At the second homestead, he said the suspects allegedly assaulted Raphael Nago, 59, and Apolonia Derera, 46, with an iron bar.
Insp Mahoko said Mr Nago sustained a fractured left leg in the attack.
“They demanded money and other valuables and were given US$3,130 in cash, approximately 9.6 grammes of gold amalgam, a cellphone, a gold metal detector and keys for a sky blue Honda Fit motor vehicle, registration number AEQ 6505, which was parked in the yard,” he said.
Insp Mahoko said the suspects loaded groceries and the 14-year-old boy into the vehicle before driving away.
He said the juvenile was later dumped in a bush.
Insp Mahoko said investigations were underway and no arrests had been made.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police appeals to members of the public who may have information regarding the whereabouts or identity of the suspects, or the stolen property and vehicle, to report to the nearest police station,” he said.
He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious persons and activities to the police.
