THREE armed robbers raided a butchery at Silveira Business Centre in Bikita and got away with cash and cellphones with a combined value of $590, police confirmed.
Masvingo police spokesperson, Chief Inspector Peter Zhanero, said the criminals wielded a pistol and pounced at the shop around 8PM. Chief Insp Zhanero identified the robbers as Batsirai Makange, 30, of Makanga Village under Chief Mabika, Alfios Chipetani 24 of Mazira Village and the third one only identified as Clifford, 24, of Rudhanda area in Zaka.
“Chipetani fired a warning shot into the air before demanding cash from the owner of the butchery, Last Mvuto,” said Chief Insp Zhanero.
“The other two entered the shop whilst Chipetani stood guard outside.
“He ordered some people outside to get into the butchery while Makange manhandled Mvuto as Clifford searched his pockets and took away $350 and three cellphones.”
He said Mvuto wrestled Makange and overpowered him but Makange picked an axe behind the counter and struck Mvuto on the left leg.
Chipetani then fired another shot into the air to disperse patrons who had mobbed the butchery and a third one that attracted the attention of patrons who were drinking beer in the next building.
As the mob grew the robbers fired a fourth shot into the air to disperse them and the two fled leaving Makange behind.
Villagers effected citizen arrest on Makange and took him to Bikita Police Station.
Mvuto was rushed to Silveira Mission Hospital for treatment.
Insp Zhanero said police have launched a manhunt for the two suspects who are still at large.
He said the robbers got away with $350, an Xtell cell phone worth $100, Nokia 5230 worth $100 and a CZ cell phone-touch screen worth $90.
