Armyworm marches on

The fall armyworm has spread to Kadoma, Beatrice and Chiredzi affecting the early irrigated maize crop.

The bulk of the affected crop is under the Command Agriculture programme.

The fall armyworm affects maize, sorghum, sugarcane and other cereals.

The head of the Plant Protection Unit under the Department of Research and Specialist Services, Dr Godfrey Chikwenhere, said teams from the department were on the ground in all provinces to monitor the situation and assist farmers.

Dr Chikwenhere could not give the exact hectarage of the crop destroyed by the pest.

He said the figures would be available end of this month.
