Sinqobile Mhlanga, a prominent lesbian business owner from Nketa, Bulawayo, has been arrested following her return to the city after a mysterious disappearance that lasted nearly four years.
Mhlanga, who operated a popular clothing boutique catering to the LGBTIQ community, was taken into custody by police shortly after her reappearance in this month.
A relative of Mhlanga spoke about the boutique’s significance, stating, “Her shop was a favourite among members of the LGBTIQ community. She sold various apparel that resonated with our culture and identity, making her boutique a vital hub for us.”
The boutique’s popularity, however, drew the ire of neighboring businesses, leading them to pressure local authorities to shut it down.
In July 2020, as tensions escalated, Mhlanga reportedly went missing amid mounting pressure from the police, who had begun questioning her about her business operations. “We were all worried when she disappeared. It felt like she was being targeted simply for being herself and running a business that served our community,” her relative added.
Mhlanga’s return this month was met with swift action from law enforcement, resulting in her arrest. “We are deeply concerned for her safety now that she is back in custody,” her relative expressed. “We just want her to be safe and to continue her work without fear of persecution.”
The arrest has reignited discussions about the treatment of the LGBTIQ community in Bulawayo, highlighting ongoing issues of discrimination and the need for greater protection and acceptance. Supporters of Mhlanga are rallying to advocate for her rights and ensure her safety as the situation unfolds.
