Arsenal held, Spurs beaten

JACK Wilshere rescued a point for Arsenal at West Brom to send them level with Liverpool at the Premier League summit, but a thrilling match might easily have gone either way.The Baggies, fresh from downing Manchester United last weekend, had ample opportunity to extend their lead after Claudio Yacob headed home a Morgan Amalfitano cross in the 42nd minute.

But it was Arsenal who ended the game in the hunt for the points after Wilshere, looking to replace reports of late night smoking with more positive headlines, scored with a deflected first-time shot from 20 yards to grab a 1-1 draw.

Tottenham suffered their biggest home defeat of Andre Villas-Boas’ reign as West Ham ran riot with a stunning second-half display at White Hart Lane.

The Hammers scored three stunning goals in 13 minutes to come away with their first victory at White Hart Lane since 1999.
Winston Reid started the rout with a goal from a corner, Ricardo Vaz Te made doubled the lead and then Ravel Morrison scored a superb solo strike to seal the 3-0 win.

Substitutes Eden Hazard and Willian were on target as Chelsea beat Norwich 3-1 to claim a first away win of the league campaign.

Victory from then seemed a formality for Chelsea but it appeared anything but until a late rally. Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez strikes secured Southampton a third successive league victory, albeit in somewhat fortuitous fashion against Swansea.

The clash between two sides known for their attractive style lived up the billing, with play flowing from end to end in a pulsating encounter at St Mary’s.

Swansea dominated proceedings after Lallana’s first-half strike, only for substitute Rodriguez to make the most of slack defending to secure a 2-0 win for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Meanwhile, Adnan Januzaj starred for Manchester United, relieving the pressure on manager David Moyes as his two goals clinched a 2-1 comeback victory at Sunderland.

Januzaj’s first start under Moyes began badly when Craig Gardner handed the Black Cats an early lead at the Stadium of Light, capitalising on a heavy touch from Nemanja Vidic.But after the interval, the 18-year-old Belgian restored parity as he lashed home following a cross from Patrice Evra.

And Januzaj, who was booked in the second half for diving, completed the turnaround with a wicked volley that flew into the far corner, ensuring United bounced back from their loss at home to West Brom last weekend. Luis Suarez marked his return to Anfield from his lengthy ban by inspiring Liverpool to a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace to send them to the top of the Premier League.

The Uruguayan brought his new-born baby out onto the pitch before kick-off, and gave Liverpool the lead in the 13th minute with an improvised finish after playing a great one-two with Jose Enrique.

Daniel Sturridge then doubled the lead just four minutes later thanks to a wonderful solo effort. Captain Steven Gerrard added a third before half-time from the penalty spot to score for the Merseyside outfit for the 15th consecutive season.

Dwight Gayle scored a consolation for the away side 14 minutes from time. Manchester City ended Everton’s unbeaten record in the Premier League to finish a difficult week on a high.

Defeats by Aston Villa and Bayern Munich had made this a very important game for City and under-pressure goalkeeper Joe Hart, and they responded in style with a 3-1 win at the Etihad Stadium.

Romelu Lukaku put Everton ahead in the 16th minute but Alvaro Negredo equalised a minute later and Sergio Aguero struck to give the hosts the lead just before half-time.

Tim Howard then diverted in a third in the 69th minute after initially saving Aguero’s penalty. The victory was only City’s third in 13 attempts against Everton, who tasted defeat for the first time in the league under Roberto Martinez.

Newcastle United bounced back from successive Premier League defeats after a Loic Remy double spurred them to a 2-1 victory away to Cardiff.

David Marshall produced two stunning saves to keep the home side in it early on, first tipping Moussa Sissoko’s long-range effort over the bar before somehow denying Loic Remy from close range.

Fulham left it late to inflict a miserable return to Craven Cottage for Mark Hughes as Darren Bent’s goal was enough to see off Stoke City 1-0. Fulham could count themselves a little fortunate to still have 11 men on the field early in the first half after Pajtim Kasami appeared to slap Erik Pieters on the back of the head, but referee Roger East chose not to give out any punishment.

Stephen Ireland saw his penalty shout turned down when tumbling under the challenge of Philippe Senderos, but Stoke were again going potty at East minutes later after Jon Walters was hauled down inside the penalty area by Fernando Amorebieta — again, their shouts were dismissed. Robert Huth then saw his header cleared off the line as the away side dominated in West London.-Soccernet.
