Arsenal short in defence

GOTHENBURG. — Arsene Wenger admits Arsenal will head into the English Premier League soccer season short of centre backs after Gabriel was forced out of their final pre-season game with what looked like a serious injury.

Wenger says he will assess the extent of Gabriel’s injury before turning to the transfer market.

The Gunners are already going to be without experienced campaigner Per Mertesacker until 2017 and Gabriel also looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering ankle ligament damage in their 3-2 win over Manchester City on Sunday night.

And after the victory in Gothenburg, Wenger confirmed Laurent Koscielny will not be available to face Liverpool in their Premier League opener on Sunday after being given extra time off following his involvement with France at Euro 2016. — The Mirror.
