Art Gallery plans Independence exhibition, calls on artists to submit their works

The National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe, Bulawayo is calling on artists to submit their works for the Zimbabwe Independence exhibition. The exhibition meant to revive humanity towards others through cultural celebrations will be held at the gallery from April 28 to May 24. It will include paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, photography, video performance, design, craft sound and new media.

Those interested in participating are being urged to submit their works between April 19 and 22.

Zimbabwe this year celebrates 36 years since it gained independence from the British in 1980 and by hosting this event, the art gallery hopes to educate people on the importance of the independence celebrations.

“This exhibition is meant to engage the nation to revive the spirit of Ubuntu/Unhu by celebrating our cultural heritage and tangible visual culture,” the gallery said in a statement.

“The exhibition aims to be seen as a contemporary guide for creative memory of our Independence Day celebrations derivation and growth driving to preserve the cultural archives of the country’s inventive activities in the post-independence Zimbabwe, over the passage in time.

“The exhibition is expected to make statements concerning our social developments, environmental surroundings and cultural inheritance.”
