Art journalists challenged

Maria Chiguvari

PHOTOGRAPHER and conceptual artist, Nyadzombe Nyampenza, has urged art reporters to do better and bring value to the interpretation of every artwork.

He believes lack of depth and understanding of art has destroyed the appeal of arts reportage as the current crop of arts journalists prefer to write about easy stuff like music.

He shared this during the art workshop for journalists recently held at the Herald House.

“Journalists are afraid and intimidated to judge art; most reporters don’t write critical analysis about  art since they are afraid to be wrong.”

Nyanzombe believes that a good interpretation of artworks is needed for art to be appreciated.

“It’s not always about asking the artist what his or her work means, journalists should interpret the work and give to the masses what they think,” he said.
