LIVESTOCK farmers in the province are in for a treat as cattle breeders will be offered artificial insemination lessons for the first time in the history of the Matabeleland South Agricultural Show. Partners and specialists are expected to conduct practical sessions at a venue close to the Gwanda Showgrounds, the site of the trade showcase.
The 64th edition of the Matabeleland South Agricultural Show will be held from August 18 to 20 under the theme: “Revamping the face of agriculture for food security and economic sustainability.”
First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa is expected to officially open the event, which is the main business exhibition for the province, on August 20.
Following the successful hosting of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) earlier in the year, stakeholders are optimistic that the provincial show will provide an opportunity for farmers and other businesses to expand their networks.
Matabeleland South Agricultural Show Society president, Mr Mkhulunyelwa Ngwenya, said the show is an opportunity for businesses to revamp their enterprises.
“As an organisation, we realise that the Covid-19 induced lockdowns slowed down progress in agriculture and other sectors of the economy. The Matabeleland South Agricultural Show Society (MSASS) is therefore urging everyone, that is, corporates, farmers, organisations, academics and researchers to come up with revised, improved or renewed approaches that will ensure our agriculture provides sufficient, safe, nutritious, and preferred food for communities,” said Mr Ngwenya.
He said the advent of renewed strategies will ensure economic sustainability.
“One of the major attractions this year, the first of its kind to be offered to livestock farmers is the artificial insemination for cattle breeders. Partners and specialists will conduct a practical session and one of our local cattle farmers has offered a venue in close proximity suitable for this exercise. Farmers are excited about this, both commercial and stud cattle breeders,” said Mr Ngwenya.
He said the trade showcase is an opportunity for business interaction and there will be a cocktail dinner at a local lodge for exhibitors where companies will be selling their products and services to fellow exhibitors.
“This year we’re expecting good attendance from new and traditional exhibitors due to relaxed Covid-19 restrictions. New exhibitors include IPEC, Turnall Holdings, the Department of War Veterans, Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, and Zimbabwe National Army who had been absent for some time,” said Mr Ngwenya.
He said commercial and stud cattle breeders from around the province will be showcasing their animals.
“Prominent cattle breeds will be coming from Hlango Ranch and Carmen Brahmans, all from Umzingwane District. We have also partnered with CC Sales to have an auction where we expect goats and cattle to be auctioned. Over 80 crop farmers will attend from some districts in the province which include Bulilima, Mangwe, Insiza, Beitbridge, Umzingwane, Matobo and Gwanda,” said Mr Ngwenya.
He said the event would be held under strict Covid-19 protocols.
“Adults and children will be allowed although under WHO protocols as Covid-19 is still with us. Various local artistes will be providing entertainment to exhibitors and members of the public. Horse riding and jumping castles will be available for the children.
“Space for exhibition is still available and we are encouraging corporates, farmers, organisations and individuals to come and make bookings. We’re also inviting members of the public to come and enjoy their time at the show,” said Mr Ngwenya. – @Yolisswa
