Renowned visual artist, Keith Zenda, is committed to highlighting challenges faced by vulnerable women and children through his latest exhibition titled “Maonero Angu” or “My Views, My Perspectives.”

The thoughtfully curated exhibition is on display at Hunters Moon Estate in Highlands, Harare.

Born in Chirumanzu, Zenda has toured extensively around the world, showcasing his remarkable talent.

He is optimistic that this exhibition will fulfil its intended purpose. Running until April 17, the work has captured the attention of art collectors and enthusiasts alike, thanks to its superior quality.

In his curatorial statement, he emphasises the struggles faced by children and women. “This exhibition is a collection of artworks that reflect my views on the world around me, particularly the lives of women and children.

“Through portraits of women with eyes that convey rural scenes and social lifestyles, I aim to capture the essence of their experiences and the world they inhabit.

“The incorporation of recycled materials, such as old kango pots and rusted metal dishes, symbolises the beauty of reuse and the importance of preserving our heritage,” he explained.

Drawing inspiration from his personal experiences, Zenda has effectively highlighted the plight of women in rural communities where he was raised.

“Childhood daily life experiences and activities are depicted in various artworks, showcasing both the joys and challenges of growing up. However, the broken eggs that appear throughout the exhibition serve as a poignant reminder of fragility,” he stressed.

He added that the portraits of women adorned with chains and locks on their necks, mouths, and eyes—some with keys as earrings or embedded in their eyes—speak to themes of freedom, empowerment, and self-liberation.

“These symbols remind us that true freedom comes from within and that the power to unlock our potential lies within ourselves,” he said.

Ultimately, “Maonero Angu” invites viewers to reflect on their own experiences and perspectives. It calls for an acknowledgment of both brokenness and the beauty, hope, and resilience that exist within and among us. Reflecting on his career, Zenda expressed fulfilment after a successful 2024 season, during which he staged 20 exhibitions.

“Last year was incredible for my art career. My biggest highlight was exhibiting in Dubai, sponsored by SwissZimHeritage, an organisation I am proud to co-found. It was an amazing experience to showcase my work on an international platform.

“Additionally, I completed the construction of my Art Centre studio in Lower Gweru, which has been a dream come true. I’m excited for 2025, with upcoming exhibitions planned in Switzerland and the USA—I can’t wait to share my art with new audiences.” Zenda also highlighted his commitment to community development, stating,

“For me, art is not just about self-expression; it’s also about service—uplifting others and giving back where it matters most.”

Looking ahead to 2025, Zenda is filled with determination.

“With upcoming exhibitions in Switzerland and the United States, I am eager to continue growing, sharing my vision, and carrying the spirit of Zimbabwean art to even greater heights,” he emphasised.

The talented artist will launch his book titled Keith Zenda Art at the International Art Festival in Zurich, Switzerland, in May.

He aims to empower others through his work, demonstrating that art can transform lives when taken seriously.

“I have reached a point where I want to leave a lasting impression. By publishing my book, I hope to inspire others and show that art can create meaningful change,” he said.

Having honed his craft since the age of 10, Zenda has been celebrated for his art collections, deeply rooted in the Ubuntu spirit, capturing the essence of African culture and showcasing the richness of Zimbabwean heritage.
