Artistes ‘roar’ at Lion Lager gig

Stakes were high and the artistes gave their all to thrill the audiences indicating that Zimbabwe dancehall scene will never be the same again. Also not to be outdone were deejays Banks and Munyaradzi Milimo of Star FM who took charge of the decks for the greater part of the afternoon throwing down some serious club bangers.

Jah Prayzah, who returned from the United Kingdom last week, came guns blazing ready to rock his fans and he did just that. Backed by his Third Generation band, the “Gochi Gochi” singer did not waste time and proved to many that he was no fluke.

He has improved on his act and to appear on the same bill as dancehall heavy hitters in the mould of Guspy Warrior and Winky D, shows how much fans have gained confidence in him. Another interesting aspect of Jah Prayzah is his ability to know what to play at different occasions.

Fans were on their feet throughout his act and he sealed off his show with “Sorry Mama”. You cannot take away the fact that Jah Prayzah now appeals to both the young and old. He is the man to watch out for.

Guspy Warrior was next on stage, and he impressed all and sundry that he is a force in reggae/dancehall. Backed by a live band, Guspy Warrior a.k.a the “Preacher’s Son” is coming up in a big way and he has set his sights on the dancehall throne.

Like Jah Prayzah, Guspy -whose real name is Emmanuel Manyeruke – had the fans gasping with his brilliant performance.

Later, it was party time with Judgment Yard’s DJ Flavour in the mix. If you have never been to Red Fox, popularly known as “KumaRasta”, then it’s about time you did so. Arguably the number one sound system, Judgment Yard took fans on a fantastic voyage doing what they know best in reggae/dancehall. The presence of Legendary Sound added spark to what was already an action-packed evening of music and dance.

DJ Smylie who has become the face of Legendary Sound took to the stage and did his thing — “Usadaroooo” -much to the amusement of the massive crowd.

“Remember any gal who can’t whine — wasara,” he screamed.
And the last live act, Winky D made a grand entrance after a prayer from Judgment Yard.

Surprisingly, Winky D or the “Ninja President”, did not have a live band but he managed to pull it through with support from DJ Flavour.

He performed one hit after the other and whipped fans into a frenzy. However, Winky D was on point but one thing that was clear was that there are other artistes following in hot pursuit. He needs to step up his game or else the throne will be taken away for good.

Patricia Murambinda, the Lion Lager marketing manager, said they have introduced yet another exciting activation in the market called Campus Nites Activations 2013.

“These activations make a welcome introduction into the market buttressing Lion as a beer behind music and musical festivals.

“Lion Lager has supported its consumers’ passions over the years and will thus significantly assist in the development of musical festivals in Zimbabwe. This activity was carefully selected from a list of potential sponsored activities simply because it stands as a passion for us Zimbabweans and the Lion Lager drinkers as well. The activations see Zimbabwe’s most loved beer engage in the market through the most loved passion point — music,” she said.

According to Murambinda, the activations serve as a build-up to the coveted Lion lager Summer Festival, pencilled in for October 12, 2013 this year. The activations will start in Harare and will move across the country in the major cities which include Bulawayo, Masvingo, Mutare and Gweru culminating into the big day in October.

Murambinda said she was humbled by the huge turnout at Belgravia Sports Club and hopes it will continue in other cities.
